Porcelain Floor Tiles Or Ceramic Tile?
What’s the difference? Ceramic and Porcelain both called “ceramic tile” are essentially the same. Both are made of clay and fired but have one slight difference.
Ceramic - is made of clay and fired, then likely glazed making the surface waterproof. Ceramic has a porous body with a water absorption rate of up to 7% meaning this product is NOT “freeze thaw stable” and should NOT be installed in exterior areas that get wet and freeze. Due to the amount of water this tile can absorb when it gets wet, it’s likely to freeze and crack as it thaws.
Porcelain - is made of a mixture of clay and sand, then fired at a higher temperature for a longer period of time then regular ceramic making it a denser, less porous tile. Porcelain has a more impervious body with an absorption rate of up to 0.5% meaning this product is “freeze thaw stable” and can be installed in exterior areas that get wet and freeze.
Both ceramic and porcelain are suitable for interior application and under normal circumstances, there would be no noticeable difference in wear between the two.
"Natural Stone" refers to a number of products quarried from the earth, used over many thousands of years as building materials and decorative enhancements. These products include Granite, Marble Travertine, Slate and others. They are more than just rocks – natural stone is hand selected from the most consistent sources for durability and beauty.
Natural stone products differ in composition, color, and texture even among pieces from the same source. This is usually considered a benefit, lending itself to one of a kind designs and distinctive, dramatic applications.
The average price for a natural stone floor will likely be twice the price of a ceramic tile floor.
